I was first introduced to clay and film photography at art college when I was sixteen. My tutors enthused about working ‘in the round’ and seeing the world with fresh eyes, and gave language to the experiences I’d had as a child that I couldn’t yet express: how the ordinary can be beautiful, how form and texture, light and shadow, negative space and awareness can become something creative. These formative lessons still make up the foundations of all my work.

Shout out to Geoff and Susie Tucker. Legends, both.

In my early twenties I made slip-cast and jigger-jolly tableware in a local pottery. Most days, while I stood fettling greenware, I watched the in-house potter on the wheel, and found myself mesmerised by the grace and ease of his throwing. We became friends, and he got me some work at his friend’s studio pottery next door. In that small and dusty studio I was encouraged to take up throwing, and introduced to the work and influence of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada.

Shout out to Stan Johnson & Glynn Ward. More legends.

For many years, ceramics, photography, writing and music were like creative whirlwinds in my mind, who competed against each other for my attention. One would occupy me completely for a while, but then suddenly get swapped with another for no apparent reason. It was often frustrating, but I’ve come to understand they’re all just different dialects in my own creative language. When I lean into whatever is happening it’s always genuine, and keeps me moving in the right direction. That’s my creative process. That and the fact that Special Interest Hyperfocus is definitely a thing!
